Homelessness in Minnesota

Walk around downtown St. Paul or Minneapolis any day and you’ll see homeless people on the sidewalks or skyways, backpacks in tow. Exit any freeway ramp around town and you’re likely to see someone holding a cardboard sign, asking for money.

Who are these people? Why should we care?

These people are our neighbors. They may have been employed but lost their home. Or they may have grown up on the street to parents who were homeless and have never known any other way.

Whatever their story, they have unsurpassable worth as human beings and deserve our care and attention. Proverbs 31:8-9 says, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

And it says in Isaiah, “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” (Isaiah 1:17)

You can stand up for those who don’t have a voice in our society.

how you can make a difference

Are you ready to Stand Up to Homelessness? There are many ways you can get involved in fighting homelessness in our community.

1. Tour the Union Gospel Mission campuses

We’ll tell you more about our holistic approach to care that includes education programs, Christian discipleship, support services, and more that help men and women get off the streets for good. Groups or individuals welcome! Email us at tours@ugmtc.org to let us know when you’d like to come.

2. Donate Items to Union Gospel Mission

Our Central Services warehouse on the Men’s Campus, 435 University Ave. E. takes non-cash donations of new or gently used clothing, coats, blankets, personal items, and much more for the men and women who come to the Mission.

Items can be dropped off at the warehouse during business hours. Call 651-789-7606 for more information.

3. Hold a fundraising event for the homeless

You can raise money for the homeless who come to Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities! Here’s some “fun-raising” ideas to help you get started. What great ideas do you have?

  • Set up a lemonade, brownie, or cookie stand in your neighborhood
  • Hold a garage sale with your friends, neighbors, or through your church
  • Put on a talent show for your church or neighborhood
  • Arrange a run, walkathon, bike-athon, or roller skating marathon for all skill levels
  • Take an offering in your church group
  • Hold a silent auction

Special Note to Thrivent Choice Members: Did you know you can direct your Thrivent Choice Dollars® to Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities, or coordinate a Thrivent Action Team to benefit the Mission? Over $40,000 has been donated to the Mission so far! It’s an easy way to donate to a cause you care about.

4. Volunteer at the Union Gospel Mission

The best thing you can do when you see someone on the street is to hand them a Ticket of Hope. This ticket gives the homeless everything they need to know about how to get their life back on track.

6. Assemble Bags of Hope

Put together bags of personal items for the homeless, such as combs, toothpaste, or socks. Call 651-228-1800 for list of suggested items!

7. Tell your friends!

Like us and share Mission stories on Twitter and Facebook. Tell your friends at church or work about our current needs and opportunities so you can be the hands of feet of Jesus Christ together. You can be an ambassador for the homeless to those around you.
